Knoxville Symphony Youth Orchestra’s Summer Music Camp provides an engaging and fun atmosphere for students to gain ensemble experience, interact in elective classes, and participate in great music-making. We aim to improve each student’s level of performance by focusing on ensemble technique and skills. Accepting applicants from beginning levels to the most advanced, students are assigned to ensembles based on musical experience. We strive to create a healthy environment where the focal point is effective learning, not seating or placement.
♪ PRELUDE: Introduction to orchestral playing. Excellent opportunity for beginner students and for students with little orchestral experience. Recommended for new students auditioning for the Knoxville Symphony Youth Orchestras in August 2023.
Open to string students with a basic understanding of set-up, posture, and technique. Students should have basic knowledge of note-reading and rhythm training. Minimum of at least one year of individual instrument studies required.
Average age: 6-12.
♪ OVERTURE: Students with limited orchestral experience. Excellent opportunity for students to sharpen their ensemble skills while learning new music. Recommended for new and returning students auditioning for the Knoxville Symphony Youth Orchestras in August 2023.
Open to string students who have established good set-up, posture, and technique. Students must be fluent in note-reading and rhythm. Minimum of at least one year of orchestral experience required.
Average age: 9-14.
♪ INTERMEZZO: Excellent opportunity for experienced students to perform at a higher level. Recommended for returning students auditioning for the Knoxville Symphony Youth Orchestras in August 2023.
Open to string students who excel in note-reading and rhythm, and are comfortable with shifting. Students should have experience using vibrato. Members of this ensemble are most likely participating in weekly private lessons. Minimum of at least three years of orchestral experience required.
Average age: 11-16.
♪ FINALE: Students with advanced orchestral experience. Excellent opportunity for students to perform challenging repertoire at a high artistic quality alongside University of Tennessee students, KSYO alumni, KSO members, and staff. Recommended for students auditioning for the most advanced ensembles of the Knoxville Symphony Youth Orchestras in August 2023.
Open to advanced string students producing a mature and controlled tone with accuracy in higher positions, off-string bowings, and vibrato. Members of this ensemble are actively attending weekly private lessons. Private instructors may be contacted for reference. Students may be asked to audition since enrollment to this ensemble is limited. Minimum of five years of orchestral experience required.
Average age: 14-18. (Students must be at least 12 years old)
♪ CONCERT WINDS: Open to woodwind, brass, and percussion students who are developing technique and skills in note-reading, rhythm, and style. Minimum of at least one year of ensemble experience and/or private lessons. Excellent opportunity to be trained by musicians of Appalachia: A Southeastern Wind Symphony.
♪ SYMPHONIC WINDS: Open to woodwind, brass and percussion students who have established technique and fluency in note-reading, rhythm, and style. Recommended at least three years of ensemble experience and/or private lessons. Excellent opportunity to be trained by musicians of Appalachia: A Southeastern Wind Symphony.
To assist in ensemble and seating placement, concert wind and symphonic wind participants are required to prepare and record an excerpt listed above. These will be submitted with your camp application. Preparation of a specific ensemble excerpt does not guarantee placement in that ensemble. Please use your own judgement when selecting which excerpt to prepare and submit. ALL APPLICATIONS ARE DUE BY MAY 27.
