Participants must either be a resident or a student in the states of Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, or West Virginia.

Application Deadline: January 5, 2009

Submitted works should follow the following restrictions:

•Duration: 7-12 minutes length

•Orchestration: Flute, Clarinet, Oboe, Bassoon, Horn, 2 Violins, Viola, Cello, Piano

The above listing is maximum orchestration; however, submitted compositions do not need to use the full forces listed here.

•The concert on which the competition winner will be premiered bears the thematic title, Chamber Music of America (featuring works by Bernstein, Richman, Bowles, Copland, Barber and Bolcom).

Submitted works must be created solely by the registered composer.

The piece is to be completely original and not based on any pre-existing musical material. It may be written “after” something; in other words, inspired by another source (play, poem, novel, film, etc.), but any copyright issues must be handled by the composer. The Knoxville Symphony Society bears no responsibility in the event of any copyright violations on the part of the composer.

The piece that is chosen for performance must not have been performed previously and must not have been the winner of any other competitions. Submitted scores must be legible and in full score format.  (For standard practice samples please see the MOLA Guidelines.) Rehearsal recordings or synthesized mock-ups of the submitted work are requested but are not necessary and will not influence the judgment of the work.

The KSO will retain performance and recording rights for the work for one year following the world premiere.

The Knoxville Symphony Chamber Orchestra on the subscription series will perform the winning composition on April 5, 2009.

No financial awards will be granted. However limited financial assistance towards preparation of written materials and copying will be available.

The judging panel will be comprised of musicians and administrators associated with the Knoxville Symphony Society.

The Knoxville Symphony Society reserves the right to not select any work as a winner if no submitted works are deemed qualified.

Composers requesting to have their scores and CD’s returned must include with their submission a self-addressed, stamped envelope.
