2010-2011 Auditions

Audition Fee - $15

You should plan to check in at least 30 minutes prior to your scheduled time to complete paper work and pay your audition fee. 

All candidates for the 2010-11 Youth Orchestra Association Season will be notified of the auditions results by mail. 

Members of the Knoxville Symphony Youth Orchestra Association will begin rehearsals on Monday, September 13, 2010.

Knoxville Symphony Youth Orchestra Association Membership fee - $190

Criteria and Requirements

Junior Philharmonia

Conductor - Erin Archer
String Auditions Only
Average Age Range: 8-13

Junior Philharmonia Orchestra serves students who have studied their instrument a minimum of at least one year.  No orchestra experience is required. These students must be able to sight-read and have good set-up and basic technique.  They learn ensemble techniques and how to follow a conductor.  Jr. Philharmonia  members are advised to take private lessons.  They join the Philharmonia Orchestra for the Winter and Spring Concerts.

Requirements:

  • One prepared solo which demonstrates the player’s most advanced level of technical and musical development. (40%)
  • Sight Reading (40%)
  • Possible demonstration of prepared scale - student's choice (20%)

*Please note that selected players will be placed in either the Sinfonia, Philharmonia or Junior Philharmonia orchestras based on audition results.


Philharmonia

Conductor - Katie Hutchinson
String Auditions Only
Average Age Range: 8-13

Philharmonia Orchestra serves students who have studied their instrument a minimum of two years.  Some have had no orchestra experience, others have played in orchestra or ensemble for a minimum of one year.  These students must be able to sight-read and have good set-up and basic technique.  Philharmonia members are advised to take private lessons.

Requirements:

  • One prepared solo which demonstrates the player’s most advanced level of technical and musical development. (40%)
  • Sight Reading (40%)
  • Possible demonstration of prepared scale - student's choice (20%)

*Please note that selected players will be placed in either the Sinfonia, Philharmonia or Junior Philharmonia orchestras based on audition results.


Sinfonia

Conductor - Kathy Hart-Reilly
String Auditions Only
Average Age Range: 10-16

Sinfonia Orchestra serves students who have studied their instrument at least three years and have a minimum of three years orchestra and ensemble experience.  All Sinfonia Orchestra members must study with a private instructor and must be confidently and effectively set up on their instrument. 

Requirements:

  • One prepared solo which demonstrates the player’s most advanced level of technical and musical development. (40%)
  • Sight Reading (40%)
  • Possible demonstration of prepared scale - student's choice (20%)

*Please note that selected players will be placed in either the Sinfonia, Philharmonia or Junior Philharmonia orchestras based on audition results.


Youth Chamber Orchestra

Conductor - Wesley Baldwin
Mathew Wilkinson, Assistant conductor
String Auditions only
Average Age Range: 14-18

Youth Chamber Orchestra serves students who have studied their instrument at least four years and have a minimum of three years orchestra or ensemble experience.  All Youth Chamber Orchestra members must study with a private instructor and have started work on advanced string repertoire.

Requirements:

  • One prepared solo which demonstrates the player’s most advanced level of technical and musical development.
  • All Major Scales - Demonstrating spiccato bow technique - 4 sixteenth notes/pitch
    Quarter note = 60
  • Chromatic Scale from the lowest possible note to the highest possible note (Strings - 3 octaves)
  • Possible Sight-Reading


String players not selected for the Youth Chamber Orchestra at the 2010-11 audition will be recommended to another orchestra by the judging committee.  Students will receive a letter notifying them about their placement.


Youth Symphony

Conductor - James Fellenbaum, Youth Orchestra Music Director
String, Wind, Brass and Percussion Auditions
Average Age Range: 15-18

Youth Symphony Orchestra serves students who have studied their instrument at least six years and have a minimum of four years orchestra or ensemble experience.  (There are exceptions with the Wind, Brass and Percussion members.)  All Youth Orchestra members study with a private instructor and demonstrate advanced ability and technique.

Requirements:

  • One prepared solo which demonstrates the player’s most advanced level of technical and musical development.
  • All Major Scales - Demonstrating spiccato bow technique - 4 sixteenth notes/pitch
    Quarter note = 60
  • Chromatic Scale from the lowest possible note to the highest possible note (Strings - 3 octaves)
  • Possible Sight-Reading

Percussion Applicants:  Prepared pieces for every instrument utilized in audition.  Plus scales and rudiments, along with sight-reading.

 

Directions to the Emporium Center for the Arts

**The 100 Block of Gay Street is under construction through August 2010. Driving is restricted on Gay Street between Vine and Jackson Avenues. Visit this blog for more information.

Parking

During the 100 Block construction, free parking is available in the lot on West Jackson Avenue at the bottom of the cobblestone ramp near Gay Street, close to the railroad tracks. There is back-in angled parking on the Gay Street bridge between Depot Street and Jackson Avenue. Parking on the bridge is inexpensive (and is free after 6:00 PM on weekdays and all day on weekends).  Parking is also available at meters on Depot Street and in Regas Restaurant's parking lot.

From West Knoxville
Driving I-40 East, take exit 388 (US-441/Henley Street). Stay to the right and continue on the ramp to Western Avenue/Summit Hill Avenue. At the light, stay in the far left lane and turn left onto Summit Hill/Western Avenue. At the next light, turn left onto Broadway Avenue. At the next light, turn right onto Jackson Avenue. You will approach a cobblestone ramp leading up to the intersection of Gay Street. The Emporium is on the opposite corner at the stop sign.

From East Knoxville
Driving I-40 West, take exit 389 (Hall of Fame Drive). At the light, turn left onto Hall of Fame. Go about one mile and turn right at the Summit Hill Avenue intersection. Go about one mile and turn right onto Broadway Avenue at the Henley/Broadway and Summit Hill intersection. At the next light, turn right onto Jackson Avenue. You will approach a cobblestone ramp leading up to the intersection of Gay Street. The Emporium is on the opposite corner at the stop sign.

From North Knoxville
Take I-275 South and upon approaching the I-40 interchange, stay in the far right lane to take the US-441/Henley Street exit towards Western Avenue/Henley Street. Continue to veer right and follow the Western Avenue ramp to the light at Western Avenue/Summit Hill Avenue/TN-62. At the light, stay in the far left lane and turn left onto Summit Hill/Western Avenue. At the next light, turn left onto Broadway Avenue. At the next light, turn right onto Jackson Avenue. You will approach a cobblestone ramp leading up to the intersection of Gay Street. The Emporium is on the opposite corner at the stop sign.

From South Knoxville
Take Chapman Highway to Henley Street and follow through the intersection of Henley Street and Summit Hill Avenue (which turns into Broadway). After crossing the Summit Hill intersection, take the first right onto Jackson Avenue. You will approach a cobblestone ramp leading up to the intersection of Gay Street. The Emporium is on the opposite corner at the stop sign.

From the UT Campus area or Kingston Pike
Drive Northeast on W. Cumberland Avenue SW/US-11/TN-1/US-70. Turn left onto 11th Street. Turn right onto Western Avenue. Stay in the far left lane and turn left onto Summit Hill/Western Avenue. At the next light, turn left onto Broadway Avenue. At the next light, turn right onto Jackson Avenue. You will approach a cobblestone ramp leading up to the intersection of Gay Street. The Emporium is on the opposite corner at the stop sign.

From the Airport
Drive North on Airport Highway/US-129 N/Alcoa Highway/TN-115 N toward Payne Avenue for approximately 11 miles. Merge onto I-40 East and take exit 388 (US-441/Henley Street). Stay to the right and continue on the ramp to Western Avenue/Summit Hill Avenue. At the light, stay in the far left lane and turn left onto Summit Hill/Western Avenue. At the next light, turn left onto Broadway Avenue. At the next light, turn right onto Jackson Avenue. You will approach a cobblestone ramp leading up to the intersection of Gay Street. The Emporium is on the opposite corner at the stop sign.
