Moxley Carmichael Masterworks Series
This program features dramatic and exhilarating music from some of the Romantic era’s greatest composers. The concert opens with the exciting and recognizable overture from La Forza del destino by the legendary opera composer, Giuseppe Verdi. The program takes a dramatic turn when the orchestra is joined by soprano, Emily Birsan for arias from Verdi’s tragic operas La traviata and Rigoletto, and Franz Schubert’s Der Hirt auf dem Felsen (‘The Shepherd on the Rock’). ‘The Shepherd on the Rock’ was composed during the final months of Schubert’s life and reflects his feelings of grief, loneliness, and ultimately hope. The second half of the concert features a KSO premiere and one of the largest pieces written for Orchestra: Richard Strauss’ An Alpine Symphony! Performed as one continuous movement, the piece features 22 sections that vividly tell the story of a thrilling Alpine adventure.
